Ozzy the Commonwealth Games Raging Bull

The bull now named Ozzy was featured at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, then was at Centenary Sq from July to Sept 2022. From late July 2023 he is at Birmingham New Street Station.

About the Ozzy the Raging Bull

Wow!  That was the reaction, not only of those fortunate enough to have a ticket for the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Birmingham, but also of the many millions watching on television.

But what now for the "Commonwealth Games" Raging Bull as we shall, for the moment, refer to it as. 

As to be expected, the call for it to be on permanent display is rife and should that be the decision going forward, it will most certainly continue to draw the crowds wherever it is finally located.

It was at located Centenary Square (from July to September 2022), and, it was certainly worth experiencing close up the intricate work that has gone in to its design and build.

For a short period, the bull was moved to a car park in Ladywood, before going back to Artem FX in London for the winter. This was around late September, it was gone by October 2022.

He had no name during 2022, but was given the name Ozzy in late June 2023, after a public vote, and was rebuilt at Birmingham New Street Station during July 2023.

They then made changes to the bull, before it was revealed that he would be relocated to Birmingham New Street Station, on the first anniversary of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

There was a public vote held, and Ozzy was the name that won, after Black Sabbath's Ozzy Osbourne, this was revealed at the end of June 2023.

Ozzy was unveiled on the 26th July 2023 at Birmingham New Street Station.

Did you know?

Here are some interesting facts you may or may not know about the Bull.

- The Bull is 10 metres high and weighs 2.5 tonnes. It had to be carried around the stadium by a 17 tonne vehicle and the tele-handler facilitated the movement of the Bull. 

- The Bull was commissioned from special effects company Artem by the organisers of the opening ceremony.

- The Bull was used in the ceremony to symbolise "compassion and togetherness" after it had been pulled into the stadium by women who worked during the industrial revolution making chains for the slave trade.

- The Bull is made of scrap metal and machinery from factories.

- During the ceremony, it took 6 people to operate the bull with 3 of those being inside the bull itself.

Since Autumn 2022, when the Raging Bull was removed from the wasteland in Ladywood, Artem FX took him back to their base in West London for a complete rebuild. After the public campaign to save him. Little news over Winter 2022-23, but by Spring 2023, we found out that the bull would be living at Birmingham New Street Station. 

A public vote was put out to name the bull, this was cut down to the final four: Ozzy, Brummie, Bostin or Boulton. More details on the vote here.

Gallery of photos taken between July and September 2022, from Elliott Brown and Daniel Sturley. During the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, you could only photograph the Raging Bull from Centenary Square itself, but once the terraces reopened at the Library of Birmingham (in August) you could see him from the Discovery Terrace and Secret Garden. By the 23rd September, the bull had been relocated temporarily to a car park on Great Tindal Street and St Vincent Street. There is also a Birmingham mural with the Raging Bull on Ladywood Middleway (back of CostCutter), not far from Spring Hill Island.

A West Midlands Metro tram enters the bus gate from Paradise Circus into Centenary Square, passing the Raging Bull on it's way to Library Tram Stop. As a pair of National Express West Midlands buses head in the other direction (towards Great Charles Street Queensway).

24th September 2022

A long walk along Ladywood Middleway from Five Ways to Spring Hill to see this mural of the Raging Bull. It's on the wall of a shop called CostCutter. Painted by George Tattooer' and artist Tokes, for the Hi Vis Festival, which took place in Digbeth at the Tea Works over the weekend of 24th - 25th September 2022.

The Raging Bull was last seen in a car park in Ladywood near St Vincent Street and Great Tindal Street. The land is next to the Birmingham Canal Navigations Mainline. He is going away for repairs and TLC, and a home indoors (TBC).
